Vintage Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art
Ben F. Hoover Bird Tree Figurines
This vibrant six-bird tree carving was hand-whittled by Ben F. Hoover (1931–2014), a respected Old Order Orthodox Mennonite folk artist from New Holland, Pennsylvania. Known for his dedication to traditional Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, Hoover created approximately 400 carvings during his lifetime, each carefully painted by his daughter, Nora Hoover (1956–2014).
This piece, signed “B.F.H. 2009 – New Holland, PA” on the base, is a late example of his work and represents the continuation of a family tradition that spanned decades. It features six individually carved and painted songbirds, perched on natural branch arms, mounted to a turned wood base. The bright colors, whimsical detailing, and rustic construction reflect the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch artistry.
With the passing of Ben and Nora in 2014, the family tradition of whittling and painting folk art birds came to an end, making signed and dated examples like this especially desirable to collectors.
