Long before telephones and text messages, a Courting Candle helped determine the length of a young couple's visit. The young woman's father would place the candle at a selected height before her suitor arrived. A higher setting meant a longer visit, while a lower setting signaled that courting time would be brief. When the candle burned down to the iron coil, the evening had come to an end.

The Story Behind the Courting Candle:
A traditional timepiece, the Courting Candle was used by a young girl's father when her suitor came calling. If he approved of the young man, he would place the candle on one of the higher rings, allowing the couple a longer visit in hopes that the young man might someday become his son-in-law. If the suitor was less favored, the candle was placed on a lower ring, shortening the visit. When the candle burned down to the iron holder, courting time was over.
